Catching Up - Skype Dinner Parties

Not sure this is the right place for this post, possibly... Feel free to move it if not. Anyway, here goes:

One thing that came up recently in our discussions here, and also in Philly actually, and during some Skype conversation after the planning meeting, is the question of how we can sustain the sense of collective energy that in many ways we felt materialized during our time at Basekamp. This depends on a great many things, I suppose, but one thing that we feel would help, as trivial as it may seem, would be to keep a kind of social or convivial atmosphere between us. This would, perhaps, also help introducing the project – and the different groups and collectives taking part – to those of us that couldn’t actually join us physically in Philly.

One suggestion that came up in a recent discussion, is that we’d organize something like Skype based dinner parties; possibly with the inclusion of a visual dimension either using photographs or video streams. Of course, this is not something that all of us would have to take part in at all times. It could be two of us, or three or four, in each session, and we could do it repeatedly as a kind of keep in touch practice, on a kind of informal and spontaneous basis.

If anybody is interested, or have any other suggestions, we’d be into doing this fairly soon, just as a way to get started doing something at least remotely practical (in a kind of roundabout sense, I know…). And also to catch up with people, of course!

music

Its a great idea, Ola. (..though I am not a great small talking practitioner..)

Any thoughts regarding music? I kind of think that if we all had the same music, it'll help building a similar atmosphere for all... Maybe to use an online dj application.. Though this can create some strange offbeat mixes..

re: music

Music, yes - that would be good, something sleazy and lounge-like perhaps... or maybe we can somehow collaborate on music content, like make playlists! Could generate all kinds of very strange mixes.

Perhaps this can be expanded to conversation games, or introductions of people, practices, ideas - we can introduce topics for discussion, etc. Like a virtual hat we can draw topics and music suggestions from.

Or have put together mixes of music on specific themes that can be expanded on in conversation. Or perhaps this getting far too ambitious...

Is it possible to do video Skype for free with between more than two groups? Does anybody know if this works well? Or of any alternatives?

re: skype dinner

I like the idea of music according to a theme etc feeding into some kind of conversation game for introduction of peoples practices, which would also lead to everybody part taking getting to know each other a bit more. Perhaps also the dinner could be produced in a similar manner where we are cooking the same food but the various components in the dinner are suggested by each party taking part...almost like a potluck. This could also be done according to a theme perhaps.

skype aperitivo

I like the idea of a skype dinner. Perhaps we could have aperitivo first so we could work out technical things. We have not conferenced yet we use the microphone in the computer. What kind of technology would we need to participate?
